Recently, our Fauna Management team led a critical project in South East Queensland for a construction client ahead of a land-clearing initiative for residential development.

The objective of the project was to ensure minimal harm to native wildlife, which required Biodiversity Australia to conduct comprehensive fauna habitat surveys both before and after clearing activities. Our team also deployed on-the-ground fauna spotter catchers to protect local wildlife during the process.

One of the key focuses of this project was ensuring the safety of the local koala population, given the area’s history of koala movements. The client took a proactive approach by engaging with our specialist team to implement the best fauna management strategies to safeguard these vulnerable animals.

Koala - Thermal Imaging

“Koala safety was the highest priority for my client, especially since the area is near a recognised koala habitat. To be as thorough as possible, our team integrated thermal imaging technology into our approach,” explains Fauna Business Manager, Chris Perry.

While manual surveys were still conducted, Biodiversity Australia’s advanced thermal drone technology allowed for more efficient and accurate assessments.

“Koalas are notoriously adept at blending into the treetops, making them difficult to spot. Our drones give us a powerful advantage, acting as an extra set of eyes to ensure we don’t miss any,” Chris adds.

Over the course of the 13-day project, different sections of the land were meticulously surveyed ahead of clearing activities. A small number of koalas were detected throughout the course of the project, resulting in clearing works being directed to areas with no koala activity, while maintaining a safe buffer and remnant vegetation corridor to allow for natural dispersal.

Koala Spotting - Fauna Management

Having a comprehensive Wildlife Habitat & Impact Mitigation Plan and a Wildlife Protection & Management Plan in place, developed by Biodiversity Australia, allowed the client to proceed with operations without delays, all while remaining compliant with environmental regulations and respecting the native wildlife.

Through this collaborative approach, both wildlife and development goals were achieved harmoniously. Biodiversity Australia remains committed to providing innovative solutions that protect our unique biodiversity, ensuring sustainable progress for future generations.
