Across Toowoomba’s parks, road corridors, and neighbourhoods, a quiet transformation is taking place. Over recent months, Biodiversity Australia has been working alongside Toowoomba Regional Council to plant, water, and maintain 1,800 new trees that are an investment in the health of the city’s living landscapes.

Many of the new trees have been introduced into areas where older, taller specimens had to be removed after conflicting with overhead powerlines. While tree removal is always approached with care, it also creates opportunities to re-establish canopy in a thoughtful and sustainable way. By selecting species appropriate for the location and future growth patterns, we are helping the city rebuild a safe, healthy canopy that will provide shade, habitat and character without compromising essential infrastructure.

But planting is only the beginning. Newly established trees need consistent care to thrive through Toowoomba’s seasonal conditions, which is why our team has been carrying out dedicated watering runs, formative pruning, and early-stage maintenance across the city. These activities play a crucial role in ensuring young trees take root, adapt, and grow into strong, resilient assets for the community.

This project also includes roadside slashing and vegetation maintenance across several corridors, work that supports visibility, safety, and ongoing asset protection. These slashing activities help keep roadside vegetation under control, reduce fuel loads, and create cleaner, healthier environments around the new plantings. When combined with tree establishment, it forms an integrated approach that supports both ecological function and community safety.

What makes this project meaningful is the way it blends practical on-the-ground work with broader environmental intent. By planting trees in parks, along streets, and throughout key urban spaces, we’re helping enhance biodiversity, improve microclimates, support urban cooling, and create more liveable public spaces. And by maintaining them throughout their early growth stages, we’re giving Toowoomba’s next generation of trees the best possible start.

For us, this is the kind of work that sits at the heart of creating sustainable, community-focused environments. As these young trees mature, they’ll become part of the city’s identity, offering shade, habitat, beauty, and long-term environmental value. We’re proud to support Toowoomba Regional Council as these green corridors take shape and proud to help cultivate a stronger, more connected landscape for generations to come.
