Overview
Biodiversity Australia was awarded the contract to deliver rapid biosecurity risk management for Fire Ants across Defence bases throughout Southeast Queensland (SEQ). Given the urgent nature of the threat, our team responded swiftly to identify and prioritise high-risk areas through targeted surveys.
Treatment began immediately using a dual-method approach: direct injection and granular baiting. Direct injection offers a rapid and highly effective solution for active nests, while granular baiting supports longer-term, broad-scale, and barrier treatments. Biodiversity Australia employs specialised equipment tailored to each method, enabling efficient and effective on-ground treatment delivery.
Using our advanced ESRI GIS Dashboard technology, we conducted real-time surveys and mapped treatment zones. This system allows us to track nest locations, surveyed areas, and dormant nests in real-time, providing the client with live access to up-to-date operational data and progress tracking by a click of a button.
At present, Biodiversity Australia eradication rate sits at 61.7% with over 2,200 dormant nests over 7 Defence bases since commencing this program in June 2024.
Biodiversity Australia has also currently working under a framework of re-active works, to when a potential fire ant nest is reported a 24hour turnaround to attend, identify and treatment is carried out to ensure immediate contamination is eliminated.
Key Deliverables

- Comprehensive surveying and identification of high-risk zones.
- Development and implementation of tailored treatment plans based on site-specific.
Dual-Method Treatment Approach
- Direct Injection: Delivers a rapid kill rate within 7 days for active nests.
- Granular Baiting: Effective for broader area treatment with a 3–4 week kill rate, targeting undetected or long term prevention barriers.
ESRI GIS Dashboard Integration
- Live data tracking and mapping for complete operational visibility.
- Polygons capture real-time survey points and treatment progress.
- Client access ensures transparency and up-to-date information on nests, surveyed areas, and treatment status.
